Boat race

IMG_7821We had a bit of a late start today as Carolyn wanted to get a few things in town before we left .Pulling ropes through rings at 09.40 we went onto the services to fill with water and get shot of waste .We then cruised down past the Anderton boat lift and then to where they are pulling down this old chemical factory at Winnington. Soda Ash has been produced on this site since 1874.It was started by Brunner Mond which became part of ICI in 1926 and then separated out again in 1991. They were brought by Tata Chemicals in 2006 and re-branded as such. It finally closed in 2014 with the loss of over 200 jobs.

IMG_7827This will do us for a day or three, We are on Barnton moorings which is a couple of miles down stream from Northwich. There is probably room for about four boats here and with some very friendly neighbours this will do us just fine .

IMG_7823This old plane came over us flying very low. I haven’t got a clue what it is and I was going to do the old It’s a Fokker joke ,people of my age will remember the Stan Boardman joke well..If not here is the link to watch the video, it’s very funny.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8Yf5B6GbYk

IMG_7845It seems a very popular place for flying and we even had a visit from this pair .What a racket they made as they came straight down the river weaver and over the top of us. We also get a lot of commercial planes as we are between Liverpool and Manchester Airports.

IMG_7852The speed limit on the River weaver is 6 mph and if you have ever travelled on rivers you will know that because of the depth and the width and the effects of displacement you actually go twice as fast at half the revs on a canal. So I just don’t understand why everybody has to go so fast. We even had a race between a plastic boat and a steel narrowboat. Just look at their bow wave, surely boating is about slowing down and chilling out. I’ve heard it said that if you are in that much of a hurry on a boat you would probably be better off with a Campervan or Caravan !!! PS the plastic won.
